If you’ve ever stared at a beautifully crafted task or assignment and thought, “There’s no way my multilingual learners are going to access this,” you’re not alone.
The good news? You don’t need to start from scratch. With a few simple adjustments, you can make tasks more accessible without watering down the rigor.
Here are three quick strategies I teach leaders and educators in my work with Confianza:
1. Use the “Chunk-and-Chew” Check 🧩
Before students even start, break the task into smaller, visible steps.
- Add a graphic organizer or checklist.
- Highlight key verbs and vocabulary.
- Make sure the process is as clear as the content.
When students know exactly what’s expected, they can put their energy where it belongs: thinking, reasoning, and applying — not just trying to figure out what to do next.
2. Scaffold Language, Not Ideas 🗣️
One of the biggest misconceptions is that scaffolding equals simplifying. It doesn’t.
Instead of changing the task itself, give students language supports that help them engage with the same content:
- Provide sentence starters or frames.
- Offer word banks with visuals.
- Model a sample response aloud before students dive in.
These supports are temporary ladders — they build confidence and ensure every student has a way into the learning, reaching grade level standards.
3. Leverage Student-to-Student Talk 🤝
Tasks become more accessible when students talk their way into understanding.
- Use Paraphrasing Partners or small-group discussions to activate and build background knowledge while also boosting language.
- Assign roles during collaborative tasks so every student knows their purpose.
- Encourage students to use their home language strategically — it can be a bridge, not a barrier.
When students have space to process ideas orally first, their written and independent work improves across the board.
Bottom Line
Adjusting tasks for language learners doesn’t have to be complicated. Small shifts — clarifying the process, scaffolding the language, and leaning into student talk — create language-rich classrooms where all learners can be set up to reach their highest potential.
